The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), developed by Dr. Stephen Porges who discovered and authored Polyvagal Theory, uses specially filtered music to engage the auditory pathways connected to the autonomic nervous system. By stimulating the middle ear muscles and supporting improved detection of safe vocal tones, SSP helps shift the body from a chronic defense state into a state of greater calm and connection.


When delivered within the context of safe, co-regulated facilitation, SSP provides a model of safety that can gradually be internalized, supporting reduced physiological reactivity and a greater sense of internal coherence. This can enhance decision-making, presence, and the capacity to engage in nourishing relationships. As the nervous system becomes less burdened by underlying threat responses, individuals often find they need less effort to manage emotions and behaviors. Regulation becomes more automatic, and emotional energy becomes more available for meaningful connection and action.

Can I do SSP by myself without a provider?

Unyte Certified SSP Provider, Safe and Sound Protocol Therapy

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a powerful therapeutic intervention and is only available for use with the supervision of a trained professional (e.g. therapist, licensed social worker, mental health practitioner, clinician, educator, etc.). Your provider may, however, suggest some independent listening as part of your SSP experience. All SSP providers are required to complete an extensive training and certification course prior to delivering the SSP to ensure safe and effective delivery.

 

Please note that publicly available "SSP" playlists on Spotify and other platforms are not SSP filtered music. SSP music is only available through the Unyte app through certified facilitators.
